Slovenia’s capital city has reinvented itself in the past couple of decades. What used to be a place littered with pizza joints and uninteresting international cuisine is now overflowing with restaurants featuring declicious Slovenian cuisine.
Štruklji is one of the most popular dishes in Slovenia and it’s easy to see why; Štruklji are delicious!
The first mention of Štruklji dates back almost 500 years to when Austria ruled Slovenia. The dish quickly gained popularity and soon Štruklji was being enjoyed all over the empire.
To make Štruklji, dough (wheat or buckwheat) is rolled thin and slathered with fillings. It is then rolled into a log and steamed, boiled, baked, or fried. After that the Štruklji is sliced and served, often topped with a sauce of some kind.
Moji štruklji Slovenije is my fave place to get this delicious treat. They have so many different kinds of sweet and savory Štruklji, including the most traditional, tarragon and cheese. Savory Štruklji are served with breadcrumbs browned in butter. But my favorite is the Pistachio Štruklji, drenched in Pistachio sauce and topped with pumpkin seeds and pumpkin oil.
There are a handful of Moji Štruklji locations, but for a great experience go the the one right on the river at the Central Market. Highly recommended!
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) has nonstop flights to much of Europe, though many of those are seasonal. There are no direct flights outside Europe except for a couple to the Middle East.
There’s also bus and train service to cities like Zagreb, Croatia (about 3 hours), Venice (2.5 hours), and Trieste, Italy (90 minutes).
