The Ultimate Lake Bled Food Crawl: Cream Cakes & Hidden Gems

Is Lake Bled, Slovenia actually worth the hype? Join me, Brent Petersen, on a day trip from Ljubljana as we discover if there’s more to this alpine paradise than just the postcard-perfect church on the island. We’re hunting down the best food in Bled, hiking to hidden waterfalls, and sampling the famous Cream Cake!

In this episode of Destination Eat Drink, we skip the tourist traps and head straight for the good stuff: The Island Adventure: We take a traditional Pletna boat out to Lake Bled Island to ring the church bell (and learn a bit of history). A Hidden Food Gem: A 10-minute walk outside of town leads us to an incredible rustic restaurant for Slovenian mushroom soup and risotto under the grapevines. The Cream Cake Battle: We visit Zima bakery (at the recommendation of our boat pilot) to try the iconic Lake Bled Cream Cake and a traditional Gibanica cake. Beyond the Lake: We hike through the forest to the stunning Šum Waterfall, one of the largest lake-fed waterfalls in Slovenia. Local Brews: We wrap up the day dodging the rain at a quirky bar filled with vintage license plates to try Slovenia’s most popular beer, Union.
