The divisive drink from Spain

Kalimotxo is a popular drink all over the Basque region of Spain, but tell Americans about it and Kalimotxo becomes very divisive.

Kalimotxo origin story

Red wine and cola were first combined in Spain about 100 years ago. But, since there was no Coca-Cola in Spain until the 1950’s, a local cola was used.

Kalimotxo became much more popular when it was served at a festival in Getxo.

The combination of red wine and cola is also popular in places around the world like South Africa, Chile, Croatia and many others though it goes by another name.

Sampling Kalimotxo

Why do so many people immediately say “yuck” when told about Kalimotxo?

Well, it’s simply the uncommon combination of ingredients: Cola and red wine (and often a slice of lemon). People just can’t fathom that these two things would go together.

When I first heard about Kalimotxo, I was skeptical as well. But, ever curious, I gave it a try and you know what, it’s not bad. The little hint of anise from the cola actually fits nicely with the wine. I imagine that on a hot day, a glass of Kalimotxo would be quite refreshing.

Almost any bar in Bilbao, Spain will be able to serve you a Kalimotxo and, best of all, it’s usually quite cheap.
