In Nice, France there’s a beer made with chickpeas rather than barley.
Socca is a type of pancake made from chickpea flour. It’s famous all over France’s Cote d’Azur, especially in the seaside city of Nice.
A beer is the perfect way to wash down Socca. So why not pair your chickpea pancake with a brew that’s made with chickpea flour? Socca Biera’s recipe substitutes barley for chickpea flour in their brewing process.
The flavor of Socca Beer has only a hint of chickpeas with a little sweetness to go with the bitterness of the hops.
Lots of stores in Nice carry Socca Biera, but the best way to enjoy it is with your hot and crispy Socca at Chez Pipo or Chez Theresa. Note that some Socca Beer may use barley along with chickpea flour, so it may not be safe for people with Celiac disease.
Nice Cote d’Azur Airport (NCE) has direct flights to most major cities in Europe as well several in North America, the Middle East, and northern Africa. A tram links the airport to the city center.
High speed trains connect Nice and Marseille (about 2.5 hours). A trip to Paris is almost 6 hours. However, this is expected to be reduced to under 4 hours when the LGV Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur line is completed (expected in 2035).
