Right on the Atlantic Ocean, Peniche is known for its gorgeous beaches and surfing culture. There’s also a fascinating history (some of it dark) and delicious treats that combines chocolate with Peniche’s lacemaking tradition!

Foodie Peniche

Peniche is right on the Atlantic Ocean with a long history of fishing. So, it’s no surprise that fish and seafood are incredibly popular here. Everything from fried and grilled fish to octopus salad to the famous fish stew called Caldeirada are easy to find here.

But, there’s also a strong surfing culture in Peniche. The Silver Coast of Portugal is famous for its excellent surfing conditions and boarders from all over the world come here to ride the waves. Because of this influx, healthy and vegan options are making their way onto local menus.

Just a block from the ocean in Baleal, Mundano Baleal has a bunch of vegan dishes as well as the ubiquitous seafood options. Nearby Urban Beach Bar overlooks the ocean and has some vegan petiscos like blistered padron peppers and marinated mushrooms.

In Peniche itself, Restaurante Jazzie has some vegan options and Maharani Peniche has good Indian food.

Sweets of Peniche

Though not nearly as famous as some other pastries in Portugal, Peniche has several excellent treats it calls its own. The best bakery in the city is Pastelaria Cale (2 locations) and they have the best sugary snacks for sale.
